Can you introduce your band?
YuLi:
I am the Drummer of the band “Horror of Pestilence”. It’s mainly a Symphonic Death Metal band I think. We don't want to limit our music to style. I also have a duo Symphonic/Post-black Metal project “Traveler of Skyline” where I compose and arrange my own music.
When did you start getting into heavy metal music?
YuLi:
When I was 15, I heard Linkin Park and was shocked by Chester's voice, but at that time I didn't know about rock and metal music styles. Later, when I was playing in a band in high school, we participated in some local performances and was exposed to metal music. I was deeply impressed by the live performance of metal bands, and it was only then that I truly fell in love with heavy music.
Are you a full-time drummer?
YuLi:
Yes, not only performing and teaching, but also operating self-media.
To teach drums in China, is difficult to take an exam to obtain a teaching license?
YuLi:
I'm not sure, because I don't have that thing either, haha.
Is there anything unforgettable during the teaching process?
YuLi:
A while ago, two students flew over from thousands of kilometers to study with me. They stayed here for over a month, and every day we wake up to eat, practice drums, and sleep. They also helped me move to my new studio, this experience is a very interesting time in our lives for us.
Can you introduce your drum technique?
YuLi:
On my hands, I mainly use my wrists, like the Moller motion, if there is a fast blast beat more than 240bpm, I will use Open Close on my left hand, and fingers on my right hand.
As for my foot technique, I mainly use Swivel technique. But sometimes on some long high-speed sections, I will use heel-toe technique because I feel it's easier this way.

Do you use any drum triggers when you playing? Why?
YuLi:
Absolutely, but only on the kick drums. Because I think that for metal music, the kick drum needs to sound like a machine gun, so using triggers for a drummer is like a guitarist needing a distortion effect.
What inspired you to start a series of drum Vlogs?
YuLi:
One is to record my own experience, and the second is because in China, there are few very professional teachers who teach drummers how to use equipment and how to serve music. Most teachers and musicians only pursue technique. But it should be noted that to become a musician who serves music, one must have a stage, which can be music festivals, Livehouses, or online stages such as recording albums and self-media. So on stage, besides stable technique, what is more important is the use of various equipment and the more musical performance.
I hope to do my part to bring more metal drummers onto the stage and show the world China's excellent metal music.
Can you give one piece of advice to younger drummers?
YuLi:
Join more bands and enjoy the process of playing music.
"There is nothing that time cannot solve, as long as you persist and maintain your passion".
BTW, which Chinese food do you recommend? Which one is your favorite?
YuLi:
Cantonese cuisine, Dim sum, absolutely my top recommendation. Guangdong has the world's richest cuisine. Welcome!
